The Wedding
On Saturday, a carriage drawn by four white horses arrived to take me to the chapel. The wedding ceremony was being held in an old country estate at the edge of the village, and as the carriage thundered up the drive toward the grand entrance gates, I saw that all the Magda trees were covered in little Chinese lanterns, giving the sky a magical, greenish glow.
I was numb. Even two cups of Palace Gray hadnât been able to calm me and I didnât know what to do with myself. I was in a frenzy of agitation. As the horses came to a standstill at the front of the stately building my stomach started doing crazy things. Now that the moment was finally here, I wasnât sure if I could really go through with it, although my head kept telling me to.
Lord Albion greeted me warmly as I alighted from the carriage. He looked spectacular in a black suit and cape, with the wackiest silver shoes Iâd ever seen. Lightly, he kissed my cheek and then gave my dress the once-over.
âWhat a sight you are,â he grinned. âThis is the proudest day of my life. My only son getting married. You look absolutely beautiful, my dear.â
I lowered my lashes. âThank you, Your Lordship â¦â I broke off.
Right now, I was finding it difficult enough to breathe let alone speak.
There was a momentâs silence, and then two cherubic boys appeared dressed in smart black suits. The trainbearers.
âShall we go inside now, my dear? Your guests await!â Lord Albion took my arm and led me through the great, sculpted entrance doors.
Our appearance was greeted by joyful cheers and a band began playing Inagoul âtraditional Gresvelt folk music. Hundreds of scented candles illuminated the room in a warm, orange radiance. Gently, Lord Albion led me up the aisle, the two cute boys trailing after me with the never-ending train. Up front, two pretty flower bearers scattered black rose petals to line our path.
As I walked, my knees couldnât stop shaking, and it took every ounce of strength not to buckle. On either side of me, expectant faces sat in the stalls, watching my every move intently. There must have been more than a hundred people, but I didnât recognize any of themâno sign of Gilda or even Ebon. And no Faine, but maybe that was a good thing. My limbs felt stiff and heavy, like I was wading through water. But there was no turning back now.
After what seemed a lifetime, we finally reached the altar. It was then that I raised my head and saw Elliot waiting for me. He too was dressed in black, with a magnificent high-collared cloak made from peacocksâ feathers. For a second, we held each otherâs gaze, and then I was forced to look away. The longing in his eyes terrified me.
Soon, a hush descended over the room as the Master of Ceremonies, a gray, somber-faced man dressed in gold robes, took his place behind the altar.
